Posted on Sunday, August 26, 2012

At Marula -The Leakey Collection, we value all of our partnerships with our retailers and love to introduce you to them on a more personal level...just in case you’re in the neighborhood.

Karen Lobo and Billie Gentry are the owners of Twig and Willow, a beach side boutique in Long Beach that has a magic formula for success; two neighbors, both with different talents, who saw an opportunity when they spotted a little space at 4th & Grand pop up for rent. A love for the word “twig” and “willow” inspired the name of their boutique and the red robin mascot reflects the abundance of birds in the neighborhood.

Discover Serendipity Today!

Posted on Friday, August 17, 2012

Today is Serendipity Day! That's right a day to discover something that you were not on a mission to find.

Remember the Persian fairy tale “The Three Princes of Serndip,” whose heroes were always making discoveries of things they were not in quest of? This was the beginning of serendipity. It was 40 years ago in Exeter, New Hampshire, Brie Delisi's mom opened up a small retail store. Instead of coming up with a name on her own, she had a contest and invited the town to participate. The name that was selected was Serendipity and it proved to be just the perfect name.

Giving Back is Marula Beautiful

Posted on Monday, August 13, 2012

Here at Marula Beauty we are team of caring women who are passionate about beauty in all forms that creates a better world in the process. In other words, we believe in being beautiful beyond the bottle. We support a “Look Good – Feel Good – Do Good” philosophy so that together we can create more beauty in the world physically, emotionally, and environmentally.

We are excited to know that our fans and retailers exhibit this kind of extended beauty to themselves, their stores, and  others in their lives.  Stacey Horowitz founder of Shopping for a Change®  has been an avid supporter of The Leakey Collection and now has added Marula - The Leakey Collection to her product lineup. She and her business are the ideal illustration of the beauty beyond the bottle.

Shopping for a Change ®(http://shoppingforachange.org/) is a non-profit website where artisans, predominantly women from economically disadvantaged areas throughout the world, can sell their work. The website was born out of Stacey’s visit to Peru in 2008/2009. She was inspired by the natural beauty of the area, but troubled by the poverty and hunger that plagued the region. Stacey says, “I wholeheartedly believe people should be able to put nutritious food on their tables, a roof overhead, and have access to clean water--such basic needs, which many of us take for granted.” Read more

East African Children Are Learning Because of MarulaBeauty

Posted on Friday, August 10, 2012

International Youth Day is August 12th and what better way to acknowledge that day then to talk about how our co-founders, Katy and Philip Leakey, have been at the forefront in their rural communities in East Africa when it comes to making a difference in education. Marula - The Leakey Collection and The Leakey Collection, both strive to bring you beautiful and reliable products with an added social benefit that improves the health, life, and development conditions for our sisters in East Africa.

One of the most exciting ways your purchases contribute is by providing the work opportunities that allow the women to educate more of their children. In the past families usually could only afford to send one child to school, and it was typically a male. Also, as more parents were able to afford to send their children to school, the classrooms became overcrowded.

To combat this, co-founders Philip & Katy Leakey, founded T.R.A.D.E., Trust for Rural African Development and Enterprise, a non-profit dedicated to create sustainable environments in rural Africa. One project through T.R.A.D.E. rejuvenated the education system by building more classrooms and by paying for more teachers in rural areas, which lowered the student teacher ratio from 80/1 to 35/1. Another program dedicated to positive and sustainable community change is the Beads for Learning program that our sisters at The Leakey Collection have created. As we grow and add additional beauty to our product line, East African mothers will be able to send more of their children to school, with a majority of them being girls! Read more
